A cyber-attack on ideas: Mabna behind latest frightening global phising campaign that targets intellectual property, with allegations of state-sponsorship.

An indictment for nine Iranians was unsealed on March 23 2018. They each stand accused of a variety of crimes relating to cyber-attacks conducted on universities, government agencies, and private organisations around the globe. 31 terabytes of data was stolen - that is a lot of data! The nine suspects are all affiliated with Mabna, the group responsible for the HBO hacking (in which Game of Thrones episodes were leaked), which led to the indictment of Mesri for his involvement in the hacking and attempts to extort US$6 million. It has been revealed that the cyber-assault used customized phishing emails that were sent under the disguise of academics at other institutions. The emails contained links to academic papers that directed the victim to a malicious domain masquerading as a university web page, prompting the victim to give away his log-in details.

Among the victims were government agencies and private companies, but the primary target was universities, with around 8000 professors falling victims. So, unlike the targets identified in previous indictments, we now appear to be seeing a diversification of the type and location of the target. Furthermore, the attack was indiscriminate with regards to academic discipline. Whilst the economic value of the data should not be given disregarded (the indictment makes the cost of the stolen research to USE institutions as US$3.4 billion), the financial loss is only one implication. The concept of targeting innovation, ideas and information, acquired through years of research effort, is new and frightening. The attacks demonstrate the need for academic institutions, to improve their cyber-security, both in terms of the awareness and implementation. It is worrying that the attacks reached beyond the usual suspects of the US and Israel; universities in 22 different counties, including many in Europe, and also China, were victims. Among the non-academic targets was the Unite Nations Children's Fund, demonstrating the callous and indiscriminate way in which the Iranian cyber machine selects victims.

Whilst considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, presumably investigators must be pretty convinced of guilt to name these individuals in the indictment. These men will join those previously indicted by the FBI for cyber-criminals, in not being able to leave Iran without fear of arrest. This limitation of freedom will surely deter some of those considering a 'career' in hacking, and slow recruitment to the Iranian cyber-army.

Who is backing Mabna? The indictment reveals that spear-phising email attacks were then conducted on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran. But were there other governmental bodies involved? This is a persistent question which resurfaces with each attack. Given their close association, it seems likely that there is some level of co-ordination between the IRGC and other government offices, like those within the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when planning the cyber-attacks. Will this public condemnation deter Iran form undertaking further attacks on university, or will the stat simply distance themselves form cyber criminals?

Mystery of the UK Parliament cyber-attack unsolved, as spotlight turns on Israel

Since my last post in October, there has been no confirmation of which group was behind the cyber-attack on Westminster, or the role of the Iranian government in sponsoring or tasking the attackers (as noted in my last blog, The Times newspaper reported that the Iranian state was likely behind the attack). Since then, the Israeli General Nadav Padan, in charge of Israel's network security, has spoken out about the growing number of attacks orchestrated by Iranian state-sponsored hackers against Israel. General Padan, who is Head of the IDF C41 Cyber Defese Directorate, told the Reuters Cyber Security Summit that Iran is now responsible for many of the thousands of attacks carried out on Israel each day. The controversial nature of Israeli Foreign Policy continues to stimulate acts of retribution from the Arab states, and Iranian cyber-attacks will, at least to some extent, represent long-standing resentment caused by the Stuxnet attack - rumored to have been carried out jointly by Israel and the US in 2010. This is surely evidence that Iran is continuing to wage war in the cyber domain.

Iran has featured heavily in the news of late. John Kerry (former US Secretary), recently rebuffed Donald Trump's claims that Iran is violating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOPA), arguing that there is no 'scientific bases' and 'no evidence' for Trump's claims, and that retaining the Iran nuclear deal is key to preventing a nuclear arms race in the Middle-East. Whilst there may be no evidence to indicate that Iran is defying the terms of the nuclear deal, the USA remains at the center of the cyber-attacks (see my earlier article: Iranian Hacking Threat to US if Nuclear Deal Collapses). However, last month's attack on the UK Parliament demonstrates that Iranian hostility is not confined to the US and Israel; the governments of other Western states are also being targeted.


In the meantime, the people of Iran continue to suffer 'collateral damage', as they lose out form US government restrictions that prevent Iranians from hosting apps on the Apple and Google app stores. Iranians had previously been able to access and download Apple and Google software (as Communications Technology was exempt from the Iran embargo), and activists are putting pressure on Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to return to the Obama administration policy.

Iranian Hacking Threat to USA if Nuclear Deal Collapses



Since the signing of the nuclear deal between the USA and Iran in 2015 (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)), Iranian cyber attacks against the USA have dropped off. 

The U.S. and six partners began discussions with Iran in 2013 to lift some economic sanctions to limit Iranian nuclear developments, and since then Iranian hackers have largely reduced attacks against the U.S., focusing instead on industrial espionage and hitting rival Middle Eastern countries. However, with the threat by the U.S. President Donald Trump to walk away from the deal, there are fears that Iran will re-start cyber-attacks against the USA.

The cyber-security research company FireEye have produced a report which has identified an Iranian-government group that FireEye have called APT33 (APT means Advanced Persistent Threat, indicating state-involvement). APT33 has previously attacked using spear-phishing techniques to target companies involved in the petrochemical industry and in military and commercial aviation. Could APT33 or similar be ready to attack the U.S. if Trump quits the JCPOA?

A Short History of Iranian Cyber-attacks

  • 2010: It was suspected that the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran with the Stuxnet malware, damaging Iranian nuclear control equipment at the Natanz uranium enrichment plant.
  • 2011/2013: In possible response to Stuxnet, Iran used DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Operation Ababil attacks against over 45 major financial institutions. Seven members of the Iranian ITSec Team were subsequently indicted by the FBI for over 176 days of DDoS attacks against the U.S. and also the attack against the Bowman Dam.
  • 2012: APT33 attack the Saudi Aramco oil company using the Shamoon malware, destroying thousands of computers in that company.
  • 2015: After JCPOA, large-scale Iranian attacks against the U.S. dropped off, although this may also have been due to Iran's concerns with Syria and Yemen. Also, APT33 continued espionage attacks against the U.S., South Korea and Saudi. In 2015, many Iranian hacking forums and use of hacker handles disappeared, probably because Iran realized that they were under greater scrutiny. 
  • 2016/2017: APT33 attacked Saudi and U.S. aerospace companies, along with attacks against a South Korean petrochemical company. In May 2017, APT33 attacked a Saudi organization and a South Korean company using malicious spear-phishing emails attempting to target victims with job vacancies for a Saudi petrochemical company.

The FireEye APT33 Report

FireEye state that APT33 used an Iranian developed web-shell developed by the hacker Solevisibile to craft the spear-phishing emails to targets. The webshell (called ALFASHELL, ALFA TEaM Shell v2-Fake Mail), has the default sender email address of solevisible@gmail.com. It is not known if Solevisible is linked with APT33 or not.

APT33 used domain masquerading as the following companies: Boeing, Alsalam Aircraft Company, Northrop Grumman Aviation Arabia, and Vinnell Arabia. APT33 used the domains to target victims with spear-phishing emails.

FireEye identified the hacker xman_1365_x as being the developer of a backdoor used in APT33 malware. It appears that xman_1365_x was also a manager in the Barnamenevis Iranian programming & software engineering forum, and registered accounts in the Iranian Shabgard and Ashiyane forums. The hacker xman_1365_x is also linked with the Nasr Institute, which is similar to Iran’s cyber army and controlled by the Iranian government. The Nasr Institute appears to be linked to the 2011-2013 DDoS attacks on the financial industry (Operation Ababil).

Further indications that Iran is behind APT33

  • A malware dropper (known as StoneDrill) used by APT33 has Farsi language artifacts in it.
  • APT33’s targeting of organizations involved in aerospace and energy is aligned with with nation-state interests (not those of cyber-criminal groups), implying that APT33 is probably government sponsored.
  • Iranian working hours; APT33 worked at the time zone close to 04:30 hours ahead of UTC, which heavily indicates Iran. APT33 largely operated on days that correspond to the Iranian working week (Saturday to Wednesday). Iran is one of few countries that subscribes to a Saturday to Wednesday working week.
  • APT33 used popular Iranian hacker tools and DNS servers used by other suspected Iranian hackers. The publicly available backdoors & tools utilized by APT33 (including NANOCORE, NETWIRE, and ALFA Shell) are available on Iranian hacking websites, associated with Iranian hackers, and used by other suspected Iranian threat groups.

FBI Indicts Iranian Hackers



The U.S. FBI -Federal Bureau of Investigation- has announced the indictments of two Iranian hackers.

The hackers are Mohammed Reza Rezakhah -aged 39- and Mohammed Saeed Ajily -aged 35-. They have both been charged with the following:

  • Criminal conspiracy relating to computer fraud and abuse
  • Unauthorized access to and theft of information from computers
  • Wire fraud
  • Exporting a defense article without a license, and
  • Violating sanctions against Iran 
Arrow Tech: Vermont Software Company

Rezakhah and Ajily have been charged for activity starting in around 2007, where they and a third hacker, Nima Golestaneh -who has already pleaded guilty-, hacked into computers in order to obtain software which they would then sell and redistribute in Iran and elsewhere outside the U.S. It appears that Golestaneh worked with Rezakhah, in supplying servers for Rezakhah to conduct illegal activities.

Ajily tasked Rezakhah and other hackers with stealing or unlawfully cracking particular pieces of software. Rezakhah then hacked into victim networks to steal the software they wanted & once they got the software, Ajily marketed and sold the software through various companies and associates to Iranian entities, including universities, military and government entities, specifically noting that such sales were in contravention of U.S. export controls and sanctions. The Universities and company included: Malek Ashtar Defense University, Tehran University, Sharif Technical University, Khvajeh Nasir University, and Shiraz Electro Optic Industry. Rezakhah worked with Golestaneh, selling their "cracked" solution to the Arrow Tech software -they formed a company called "Dongle Labs", which sold a crack to the software that normally requires a hardware "dongle" for the software to work-.

In addition to payment, Ajily received certificates of appreciation for his work from several of the Iranian government and military entities. This implies that Ajily and Rezakhah could be working for the Iranian state?

In October 2012, Rezakhah hacked a Vermont-based engineering consulting and software design company -Arrow Tech-. Arrow Tech's primary product was PRODAS -Projectile Rocket Ordnance Design and Analysis System-; software that provides aerodynamics analysis and design for projectiles -from bullets to GPS guided artillery shells-. This software is designated as a “defense article” on the U.S. Munitions List of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations -ITAR-, meaning it cannot be exported from the U.S. without a license from the U.S. Department of State. Ajily marketed the same software as one of the products he could offer to his Iranian clients.

What does this mean for the hackers?

The court issued arrest warrants for both defendants, which means that if either Rezakhah or Ajily wanted to travel outside of Iran, they would be arrested. This means they are now effectively prisoners inside Iran. No doubt, their activities have brought great shame upon Iran, themselves and their families. Such illegal activities may not help their career chances inside Iran either...

It would appear that the FBI is getting tough on Iranian hackers who may work for or have links to supporting the Iranian state in such illegal activities. The indictment can be read in full here.

Zero Days: Film about Nitro Zeus & Stuxnet


 
Zero Days is a new film about investigations of the world’s first cyber weapon known as Stuxnet and Operation Olympic Games. Stuxnet is malicious software that can obscure and harm critical data. The film talks about another even more powerful cyber weapon, known as Nitro Zeus.

Stuxnet

Stuxnet is a malicious cyber worm, possibly of US and Israeli origin, It targeted the Iranian nuclear facilities at Natanz to make it look like a number of accidents.

Stuxnet specifically targets programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which allow the automation of electromechanical processes e.g.control machinery on factory assembly lines, or centrifuges for separating nuclear material.

Exploiting four zero-day flaws, Stuxnet functions by targeting machines using the Microsoft Windows operating system and networks, then seeking out Siemens Step7 software. Stuxnet compromised Iranian PLCs, collecting information on industrial systems and causing the centrifuges to be destroyed.

Stuxnet’s design and architecture are not domain-specific and it could be tailored as a platform for attacking modern SCADA and PLC systems (e.g., in automobile or power plants), the majority of which reside in Europe, Japan and the US.Stuxnet reportedly ruined almost one-fifth of Iran's nuclear centrifuges.



Operation Olympic Games

Operation Olympic Games was a covert and campaign of sabotage by means of cyber disruption, directed at Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States and maybe also by Israel.

Nitro Zeus

Nitro Zeus provided the NSA (National Security Agency) the ability to attack Iran’s command-and-control systems, which would obstruct the whole country’s communication capabilities.

The state-sponsored cyber hack would also disable Iranian air defenses, and harm financial systems as well as vital components of the power grid. This would allow US and Israeli aircraft to survey the area without being shot down.

The operation was in place as a second option just in case diplomacy and negotiations did not go smoothly. The cyber program was never actually used.

US Releases Iranian Hacker

30 year old Iranian hacker Nima Golestaneh was extradited to the US from Turkey last year suspected of hacking attack against American military aerospace contractor Arrow Tech Associates (Vermont, USA).


In October 2012 Golestaneh broke into the servers of the company which builds ballistics prediction and testing software, and accessed its databases in attempt to steal software worth $millions.

US investigators identified that Golestaneh was in Turkey and he was then extradited to the US last year for trial on charges of wire fraud, unauthorized access to computers and money laundering.


However Golestaneh was pardoned by the United States and sent back to the Islamic Republic before being sentenced.
It seems that Golestaneh was part of an active Iranian hacking team that targets both US infrastructure and defense companies as well as the Las Vegas Sands casino email system.

Ashiyane Security Team: agent of the Iranian regime


Ashiyane Security Group (officially Ashiyane Information and Communication Technology Company) is one of the oldest cyber security group in Iran (since around 2002).
Ashiyane started with the aim of teaching users and network administrators as well as improving the security level of the computer networks.
During the mass protest against the presidential election in 2009, Iran tried to control the protests in cyber space and since then Ashiyane Security Team trying to do so via hacking and identifying cyber activists which implied that Ashiyane cooperated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and other security units leading many to believe that the “Iranian Cyber Army” group is actually also the Ashiyane group.

Before 2009 protests, Ashiyane was involved in activity for the state e.g. in response to the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in Danish newspapers, over 1000 American, British and French websites were hacked by Ashiyane. News of Ashiyane activities was highly published by some news agencies such as Fars, IRNA and the newspapers such as Iran, Javan and Keyhan and was named as “Iran’s victories in cyber space”.

After changing the home page of this website, Ashiyane mostly displays a political message on the main page so that Behrouz Kamalian (team founder) said in an interview with Fars News Agency about this activity: “In response to the inhumane actions of the terrorism sponsors, headed by US and Britain, the new way of confronting is raised.”

Kamalian has also been quoted deflecting rumors about Ashiyane cooperating with the Islamic Republic Security System, “Ashiyane has also officially worked to improve the security of web sites and intranets and has served many governmental organizations, military and private companies. Unfortunately it has been announced that Ashiyane Group is affiliated to the government by many of the opposition websites with Iran’s government. I have said in my other interviews that our team is an independent group and is not affiliated with any other military or governmental organizations. We act spontaneously based on our bias and when we see a country insults our religion or our nationality, so we display our objection through penetrating into their sites and it does not mean that we have been ordered to do so. If Ashiyane was an affiliated group, it wouldn’t be able to easily interview with the media, and this freedom is a sign of our independency.”

Kamalian contradicted himself by also saying: “We get orders to hack different sites both from legal persons and individuals, but this is not part of our ordinary project and we reject many of these orders. We have never accepted to hack an internal websites to gain money. But there are websites that had insulted Quran and our religion. In these occasions we would also like to penetrate into these sites."

Kamalian has also announced about the corporation of Ashiyane with Department of IRGC Cyber Defense: “We corporate with military organizations in the field of counselling and improving the security, but it is never in the way that we get order to work on their behalf.”

He created Alborz Hackers Group which was among the first groups of Iranian hackers in 2001 and met Mahdi Mirzaei there; this meeting caused the creation of a new group called Ashiyane Group in 2002.

This team started its activity by hacking the university’s websites in the country such as University of Science and Industry (Elm & Sanaat) and Amir Kabir University.

Hacking the Iranian sites would quickly lead the Ashiyane Group to get fame among those interested in Informatics Science and many security companies (in network and internet field) invited them to cooperate.

Increasing economic activities of the group tend Kamalian to decide about registration the Ashiyane Group as an official and legal company and after the registration, in addition to providing network and servers’ security, consulting services and selling security softwares, also hold hacking, cracking and network and server and also security training.

The project of hacking a Persian website called "Balatarin" was one of the Ashiyane’s activities that raised the most negative reactions; Ashiyane declared the project with the cooperation of Virtual Jihad Group affiliated with Basij of Students, but after the negative reactions toward it Bahman Kamalian denied any involvement in the hacking.

Despite the remarkable statement of Ashiyane about its ability, while earlier it was also claimed that Ashiyane had discovered the security hole in the Telegram software messenger and the news quickly found a wide reflection in the media close to the Islamic Republic, the website of Ashiyane Security Group was hacked on July 1, 2014 and there was a black page appeared written in English: “This site has been hacked by Iranian Black Hat hackers group:” when the site was visited.

Iranian Hackers Attack State Dept. via Social Media Accounts


Iran launched sophisticated computer espionages leading to a series of cyberattacks against US State Department officials over the past month.

It is possible that cyberespionage is becoming the tool of seeking the type of influence that Iranian hardliners hoped that that country's nuclear program will eventually provide.

According to diplomatic and law enforcement officials who are familiar with the investigation Iranian hackers over the past month identified individual State Department officials who focus on Iran and the Middle East and broke into their email and social media accounts. The State Department became aware of the compromises when Facebook told the victims that the state-sponsored hackers compromised their accounts.

Iran’s cyberskills are not yet equal to those of Russia or China but the attack against the State Department by using the social media accounts of young government employees to gain access to their friends across the administration is a focus that was not seen before.

Iranians have been less destructive than they could be, but they are getting far more aggressive in cyberespionage, which they know is less likely it will prompt a response from the United States.

Iranian hackers have been responsible for a series of powerful attacks against American banks that took their websites offline as well as a destructive attack on Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer, that replaced data on employee machines with an image of a burning American flag. American government officials also blame Iran for a similarly destructive attack at RasGas, the Qatari natural gas giant,and for an attack on Sands Casino in Las Vegas, where a large number of computers were destroyed.

Last year Iranians began using cyberattacks for espionage rather than for destruction and disruption. From May 2014 Iranian hackers were targeting Iranian dissidents and later policy makers,senior military personnel and defense contractors in the United States, England and Israel.

The attacks were basic “spear phishing” attempts, in which attackers tried to lure their victims to click on a malicious link, in this case by impersonating members of the news media.
Iranian hackers were successful in more than a quarter of their attempts. The number of such attacks reached its climax in May just ahead of the nuclear talks in Vienna in July and reached more than 1,500 attempts.

In the months before the talks, Iran’s hackers began probing critical infrastructure networks in what appeared reconnaissance for cyberattacks with the objective of causing physical damage but in June and July as American and Iranian negotiators gathered in Vienna to agree a deal on Iran’s nuclear program, attacks against targets in the United States stopped. Instead of this, Iran started targeting victims in Israel as well as members of Daesh in July as the militant group began expanding territory across Iraq.

Then in August just two weeks after the nuclear accord was reached, the trickle of cyberattacks against the group’s usual targets resumed against included 1600 individuals from scholars, scientists, chief executives and ministry officials to education institutes, journalists and human rights activists. If facebook last month had not decided to use a new alert system to notify users when facebook's security team believed state-sponsored hackers had hijacked their accounts, and US State Department officials began to see a troubling new message pop up on their facebook accounts, it is possible that the victims didn't learn of the compromises.

Operation Cleaver: Mass Hacking By Iranian State



Iranian hackers have been identified as the source of coordinated attacks against more than 50 targets in 16 countries, many of them corporate and government entities that manage critical energy, transportation and medical services.

According to Cylance, a security firm based in California in USA, over the course of two years Iranian hackers managed to steal confidential data from a long list of targets and in some cases infiltrated victims computer networks to such an extent that they could take over, manipulate or easily destroy data on those machines.

Cylance called the attacks “Operation Cleaver” because the word cleaver appeared often in the attackers malicious code.

The hackers used a set of tools that can spy and even shut down critical control systems and computer networks, and aimed them at targets in the United States, Canada, Israel, India, Qatar, Kuwait, Mexico, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, France, England, China and South Korea. 
 
Victims of the attacks include: US Marine Corps, a major airline, a medical university, an energy company that specializes in natural gas production, a car manufacturer, a major military installation and a large military contractor. The Islamic Republic also concentrated attacks on oil and gas industries and universities in the United States, India, Israel and South Korea and managed to steal pictures, passports and specific identifying information for students and faculty.
