Iranian hackers Shia Eagle hack Jerusalem Post and Maariv Online on anniversary of Soleimani's death. ⚰️

On Monday it was revealed that the Israeli newspapers Jerusalem Post and Maariv Online had been hacked and hacked exactly two years since Soleimani's death. Both newspaper websites with defaced with a threatening image claiming revenge for Soleimani's death. This image shows the Dimona nuclear base in Israel being destroyed by a rocket fired from a hand very similar to Soleimani's.

No hacker group inside Iran has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, but a Twitter account called @shiaeagle posted several tweets at the time of the attack that strongly claimed responsibility. Twitter has since blocked the account.

It is clear that in 2022 this cyber war between Israel and Iran has no sign of stopping.😢 This cyber attack could also be a statement by this corrupt Iranian regime that its nuclear program is being implemented at 100 percent and could be used as another negotiating tactic in the JCPOA Vienna talks. very sad!!!! 😭

Lyceum is back! Targeting ISPs and other strategic targets 😡

Reports this week indicate that the notorious Iranian hacker group Lyceum has returned to chaos and this time mainly attacking Internet service providers and telecom companies in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Israel and other companies in the wider Middle East including the African Ministry of foreign Affairs

The Lyceum group which was first discovered in 2017 and also known as Hexene has been identified as responsible for a number of cyberattacks in July and October 2021 according to information from Accenture Cyber ​​Threat (ACTI) and Prevailion's Adversarial counterintelligence groups (PACT). The main focus of the Lyceum Group is the implementation of computer network penetration events on a number of strategic target that are appropriate for the Iranian regime. It also now appears that they are expanding their reach to other targets even including places that are friendly to the Iran such as Tunisia.

The hacker group appears to have stop used its famous Danbot .NET scripts and Powershell scripts to gain unauthorized access to the systems, and is now using a number of new technical techniques to do its evil work. Like the Base64-encoded Powershell scripts and new backdoors written in C++ which are new types of malware called James and Kevin. The group also relies on DNS tunneling which is an intrusion method for using DNS as a secret communication channel which is allowing the group to execute HTTP (S) commands using malicious C2 functionality. More scrutiny of source code also shows that Lyceum is also upgrading its backdoors to stay ahead of defense systems.

Lyceum is evil and guilty perpetrators of Iranian regime and seems to have continue committing ugly acts against other countries in the region regardless of whether they are friends or not. Please friends protect yourself against these types of attacks 🙏 by monitoring DNS traffic and being aware of suspicious domains and report them to threat information platforms.

Mystery of the UK Parliament cyber-attack unsolved, as spotlight turns on Israel

Since my last post in October, there has been no confirmation of which group was behind the cyber-attack on Westminster, or the role of the Iranian government in sponsoring or tasking the attackers (as noted in my last blog, The Times newspaper reported that the Iranian state was likely behind the attack). Since then, the Israeli General Nadav Padan, in charge of Israel's network security, has spoken out about the growing number of attacks orchestrated by Iranian state-sponsored hackers against Israel. General Padan, who is Head of the IDF C41 Cyber Defese Directorate, told the Reuters Cyber Security Summit that Iran is now responsible for many of the thousands of attacks carried out on Israel each day. The controversial nature of Israeli Foreign Policy continues to stimulate acts of retribution from the Arab states, and Iranian cyber-attacks will, at least to some extent, represent long-standing resentment caused by the Stuxnet attack - rumored to have been carried out jointly by Israel and the US in 2010. This is surely evidence that Iran is continuing to wage war in the cyber domain.

Iran has featured heavily in the news of late. John Kerry (former US Secretary), recently rebuffed Donald Trump's claims that Iran is violating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOPA), arguing that there is no 'scientific bases' and 'no evidence' for Trump's claims, and that retaining the Iran nuclear deal is key to preventing a nuclear arms race in the Middle-East. Whilst there may be no evidence to indicate that Iran is defying the terms of the nuclear deal, the USA remains at the center of the cyber-attacks (see my earlier article: Iranian Hacking Threat to US if Nuclear Deal Collapses). However, last month's attack on the UK Parliament demonstrates that Iranian hostility is not confined to the US and Israel; the governments of other Western states are also being targeted.


In the meantime, the people of Iran continue to suffer 'collateral damage', as they lose out form US government restrictions that prevent Iranians from hosting apps on the Apple and Google app stores. Iranians had previously been able to access and download Apple and Google software (as Communications Technology was exempt from the Iran embargo), and activists are putting pressure on Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to return to the Obama administration policy.

Iran's "Rocket Kitten" Group Claim Compromise of Iranian Telegram Accounts


Following on from my article here about the Iranian Cyber Police asking Iranians to stop using Telegram, it appears that the Iranian hacking group known as Rocket Kitten is behind a compromise of 15 million Telegram accounts used by Iranians.
 
Telegram is a very popular messaging app in Iran and almost 25% of the Iranian population are using the app every day.

Iranian authorities have previously demanded that Telegram provide them with "spying and censorship tools". Telegram ignored the request and was blocked in Iran for around two hours on October 20 2015. Telegram does not have any servers in Iran, making the Iranian regime's job harder to try and censor Telegram. This compares to the regime "banning" Twitter and Facebook, even though Iranians can use Tor or anonymous VPNs to get around the Iranian Internet filters...

Rocket Kitten

Rocket Kitten refers to a cyber threat group that has been attacking various organizations, such as members of the Saudi royal family, Israeli nuclear scientists, NATO officials and Iranian dissidents.
Rocket Kitten has launched two known campaigns: a malware campaign that uses the GHOLE malware, and a targeted attack called “Operation Woolen-GoldFish” which is probably run by the Iranian regime. Rocket Kitten's attacks were similar to ones attributed to the Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC). You can read more about Rocket Kitten here



Telegram attack

Rocket Kitten managed to obtain public information and phone numbers from 15 million Iranian users of the Telegram messaging app, as well as the associated Telegram user IDs. They compromised over 12 Telegram accounts and jeopardized the communications of people including activists and journalists in sensitive positions within Iran.

Telegram responded by saying, "Certain people checked whether some Iranian numbers were registered on Telegram and were able to confirm this for 15 million accounts. As a result, only publicly available data was collected and the accounts themselves were not accessed.”

Importantly, Telegram have since changed their API so that similar mass checks on accounts should no longer be possible: Telegram 1, Iranian Regime 0!

The Telegram vulnerability involved sending authorization codes via SMS text messages to activate new devices and these could be intercepted by the phone company. So, this means a Man In The Middle (MITM) attack capability by a country that has access to telecommunications networks. This further implicates Rocket Kitten as being part of the Iranian regime.


A word from the Iranian Cyber Police

The Cyber Police of Iran (FATA) have transparently tried to un-link the association between Rocket Kitten and the Iranian government by blaming Telegram's "weakness". No one believes them...



The legal and international deputy of the Cyber Police, Colonel Hossein Ramazani, said that the hackers did not get access to personal details of victims and that, "What is clear to us is the vulnerability and weakness which always existed in the service because of its text message confirmation system, through which [hackers] have gained access to the users' phone numbers. Then contents of people's chats and personal details, however, have not been compromised" Well, he obviously is not going to admit the regime did it, is he?

Use 2FA!

Telegram supports the use of Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), but is not enabled by default. That means users of Telegram should setup 2FA if they have not already done so, to prevent interception of SMS-verification codes via cellular networks (even if Telegram claim the mass lookup interception loophole is fixed). Perhaps Telegram should start enabling 2FA by default!

Zero Days: Film about Nitro Zeus & Stuxnet


 
Zero Days is a new film about investigations of the world’s first cyber weapon known as Stuxnet and Operation Olympic Games. Stuxnet is malicious software that can obscure and harm critical data. The film talks about another even more powerful cyber weapon, known as Nitro Zeus.

Stuxnet

Stuxnet is a malicious cyber worm, possibly of US and Israeli origin, It targeted the Iranian nuclear facilities at Natanz to make it look like a number of accidents.

Stuxnet specifically targets programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which allow the automation of electromechanical processes e.g.control machinery on factory assembly lines, or centrifuges for separating nuclear material.

Exploiting four zero-day flaws, Stuxnet functions by targeting machines using the Microsoft Windows operating system and networks, then seeking out Siemens Step7 software. Stuxnet compromised Iranian PLCs, collecting information on industrial systems and causing the centrifuges to be destroyed.

Stuxnet’s design and architecture are not domain-specific and it could be tailored as a platform for attacking modern SCADA and PLC systems (e.g., in automobile or power plants), the majority of which reside in Europe, Japan and the US.Stuxnet reportedly ruined almost one-fifth of Iran's nuclear centrifuges.



Operation Olympic Games

Operation Olympic Games was a covert and campaign of sabotage by means of cyber disruption, directed at Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States and maybe also by Israel.

Nitro Zeus

Nitro Zeus provided the NSA (National Security Agency) the ability to attack Iran’s command-and-control systems, which would obstruct the whole country’s communication capabilities.

The state-sponsored cyber hack would also disable Iranian air defenses, and harm financial systems as well as vital components of the power grid. This would allow US and Israeli aircraft to survey the area without being shot down.

The operation was in place as a second option just in case diplomacy and negotiations did not go smoothly. The cyber program was never actually used.

Iranian Hackers Attack State Dept. via Social Media Accounts


Iran launched sophisticated computer espionages leading to a series of cyberattacks against US State Department officials over the past month.

It is possible that cyberespionage is becoming the tool of seeking the type of influence that Iranian hardliners hoped that that country's nuclear program will eventually provide.

According to diplomatic and law enforcement officials who are familiar with the investigation Iranian hackers over the past month identified individual State Department officials who focus on Iran and the Middle East and broke into their email and social media accounts. The State Department became aware of the compromises when Facebook told the victims that the state-sponsored hackers compromised their accounts.

Iran’s cyberskills are not yet equal to those of Russia or China but the attack against the State Department by using the social media accounts of young government employees to gain access to their friends across the administration is a focus that was not seen before.

Iranians have been less destructive than they could be, but they are getting far more aggressive in cyberespionage, which they know is less likely it will prompt a response from the United States.

Iranian hackers have been responsible for a series of powerful attacks against American banks that took their websites offline as well as a destructive attack on Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer, that replaced data on employee machines with an image of a burning American flag. American government officials also blame Iran for a similarly destructive attack at RasGas, the Qatari natural gas giant,and for an attack on Sands Casino in Las Vegas, where a large number of computers were destroyed.

Last year Iranians began using cyberattacks for espionage rather than for destruction and disruption. From May 2014 Iranian hackers were targeting Iranian dissidents and later policy makers,senior military personnel and defense contractors in the United States, England and Israel.

The attacks were basic “spear phishing” attempts, in which attackers tried to lure their victims to click on a malicious link, in this case by impersonating members of the news media.
Iranian hackers were successful in more than a quarter of their attempts. The number of such attacks reached its climax in May just ahead of the nuclear talks in Vienna in July and reached more than 1,500 attempts.

In the months before the talks, Iran’s hackers began probing critical infrastructure networks in what appeared reconnaissance for cyberattacks with the objective of causing physical damage but in June and July as American and Iranian negotiators gathered in Vienna to agree a deal on Iran’s nuclear program, attacks against targets in the United States stopped. Instead of this, Iran started targeting victims in Israel as well as members of Daesh in July as the militant group began expanding territory across Iraq.

Then in August just two weeks after the nuclear accord was reached, the trickle of cyberattacks against the group’s usual targets resumed against included 1600 individuals from scholars, scientists, chief executives and ministry officials to education institutes, journalists and human rights activists. If facebook last month had not decided to use a new alert system to notify users when facebook's security team believed state-sponsored hackers had hijacked their accounts, and US State Department officials began to see a troubling new message pop up on their facebook accounts, it is possible that the victims didn't learn of the compromises.

Iran claims to stop Dino Malware attack



Iran confirms that spy malware called Dino is targeting sensitive centers inside the country since one and half years ago.

Masoud Biglarian, head of the Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERTCC), said that after malware was discovered the CERTCC which is subset of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sent a secret report to the countrys officials about the issue.

According to Irans Mehr news agency Biglarian said: «We took appropriate measures to prevent damage to the strategic centers of the country by Dino».

He also said that Dino is a type of Spyware such as Stuxnet that is designed for specific purposes and launches targeted attacks.

He rejected claims that the malware infected some sensitive centers inside the country.

Last week some western media outlets reported that Dino malware which searches for specific data and steals it has infected some organizations inside Iran.

Security firm ESET researchers in Bratislava, Slovakia identified the sophisticated Dino Trojan that attacked Iranian and Syrian targets in 2013 and it is rumor that the group is a secret part of the French Intelligence service.


Dino was supposedly created by the so-called Animal Farm Group which also created other Trojans like Bunny, Casper and Babar. Casper malwares claim to fame is that it was involved in a large scale attack on computer systems in Syria last autumn.

ESET claims that Dinos main goal seems to be the exfiltration of files from its targets.

Large scale cyber attacks on Iranian facilities started in 2010 after the US and Israel reportedly tried to disrupt the operation of Irans nuclear facilities through a worm that later became known as Stuxnet.

US intelligence officials revealed in June 2013 that the Stuxnet malware was not only designed to disrupt the Irans nuclear program but also was part of a wider campaign directed from Israel that included assassination of the countrys nuclear scientists.

Stuxnet is the first discovered worm that spies on industrial systems and reprograms them. It is written specifically to attack SCADA systems that are used to control and monitor industrial processes.

In September 2013 the Islamic Republic of Iran said that the computer worm Stuxnet infected 30 000 IP addresses in Iran but it denied reports that the cyber worm had damaged computer systems at the countrys nuclear power plants.

Duqu 2.0: ‘Almost Invisible’ Cyber Espionage Tool Targeted Russian Co., Linked to Iran Nuclear Talks

 

A Russian cyber security company says that it has discovered a highly-technical, “almost invisible” cyber espionage tool that targeted the company’s own servers and other systems around the world, including some linked to the controversial Iranian nuclear negotiations.
Kaspersky Labs which is based in Moscow announced that the discovery of the worm, called Duqu 2.0, which the company said it found this spring after the worm had penetrated through its system for “months.”



Kaspersky claims that after discovering the worm, started its investigation to find out other victims of the attack and found that some of the “infections are linked to the P5+1 events and venues related to negotiations with Iran about a nuclear deal.”
The Wall Street Journal was the first news agency to publish the news about Duqu 2.0. According to the Wall Street, computers at three luxury European hotels where negotiations had been held were among the worm’s victims.

Eugene Kaspersky said that the company cannot say definitely who is behind the attack, but he believes that due to its sophistication and technical links to previous next-generation computer worms, the attack is most possibly been carried out by a government.

Kaspersky said that the name of the Duqu 2.0 was chosen for this worm because it appeared to be an upgraded version of the Duqu worm which was another highly-sophisticated espionage tool discovered in 2011.
Kaspersky said, We can’t prove attribution because they’re going through proxy servers. “There are technical attributions we can read from the code. This attack is a relative, it’s a new generation of the Duqu attack, most probably made by the same people, or they shared the source code with others.”
Symantec which is a large cyber security company in America agreed that Duqu 2.0 is a evolution of the original threat that was created by the same group of attackers.



Symantec also reported Duqu 2.0 appears to have targeted European and North African telecom operators and a South East Asian electronic equipment manufacturer. Symantec had reported in 2012 that the Duqu threat had not been eliminated and that a new version of the worm had been discovered then.

Duqu and Duqu 2.0 is closely linked to Stuxnet, which is a revolutionary cyber-weapon that was believed to have physically damaged an Iranian nuclear facility and that was suspected to be a result of the joint US-Israeli top secret operation’s. 

 

When the original Duqu was discovered in 2011, Symantec reported that it “shares large number of codes with Stuxnet” and the same suspicions were raise about whether the attackers were the same or if source code had been shared.

Wall Street Journal in its report today said that Duqu 2.0 was “commonly believed to be used by Israeli spies.”
But according to Kaspersky Labs, Duqu 2.0 code also included a number of “false flag” clues to hide/mislead who was behind it. One was a mention in the code of a nickname for a Chinese military officer who was one of five indicted by the U.S. in an extraordinary move by the Department of Justice against Chinese cyber espionage. Another report mentioned a prolific Romanian hacker.

Kaspersky claims that such false flags are relatively easy to spot, especially when the attacker is very careful not to make any other mistakes,”

Operation Cleaver: Mass Hacking By Iranian State



Iranian hackers have been identified as the source of coordinated attacks against more than 50 targets in 16 countries, many of them corporate and government entities that manage critical energy, transportation and medical services.

According to Cylance, a security firm based in California in USA, over the course of two years Iranian hackers managed to steal confidential data from a long list of targets and in some cases infiltrated victims computer networks to such an extent that they could take over, manipulate or easily destroy data on those machines.

Cylance called the attacks “Operation Cleaver” because the word cleaver appeared often in the attackers malicious code.

The hackers used a set of tools that can spy and even shut down critical control systems and computer networks, and aimed them at targets in the United States, Canada, Israel, India, Qatar, Kuwait, Mexico, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, France, England, China and South Korea. 
 
Victims of the attacks include: US Marine Corps, a major airline, a medical university, an energy company that specializes in natural gas production, a car manufacturer, a major military installation and a large military contractor. The Islamic Republic also concentrated attacks on oil and gas industries and universities in the United States, India, Israel and South Korea and managed to steal pictures, passports and specific identifying information for students and faculty. 
 
Cylance said it also collected worrying evidence of attacks on transport networks, including airlines and airports in South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Researchers said they found evidence that hackers gained complete remote access to airport gates and security control systems, “potentially allowing them to spoof gate credentials.”

Operation Protective Edge: The Iranian Cyber Botnet Offensive



Cyber-attacks against Israel have increased 500% in the last month and in a new report it is written that a powerful botnet is controlled by a pro-Islamic Iranian group of hackers and was used as part of a cyber-campaign with the support of Anonymous. 
 
The increase in attacks coincided with the launch of Israel's Operation Protective Edge offensive against Gaza.

Following three weeks of intensive attacks on the ground and in cyberspace, the volume of DDoS attacks decreased on 27 July, this coincided with a temporary ceasefire in fighting between Israel and Gaza.

The attack method (which uses things such as "malformed DNS queries", "layer-7 HTTP and HTTP/S attacks", and "repeated page downloads and GETs/POSTs against non-existent URIs") has a "striking resemblance to the Brobot-based attacks" which have been first seen in 2012, but which have been silent for almost a year.

Brobot is a powerful botnet (network of zombie computers) which was first used in 2012 as part of Operation Ababil, which was a series of cyber-attacks carried out by the Qassam Cyber Fighters (also known as the Cyber fighters of Izz Ad-Din Al Qassam) against US financial institutions and continued until July 2013.

Brobot is being used to attack Israeli civilian governmental agencies, military agencies, financial services and Israeli cc TLD DNS infrastructure, and as the Israeli-Gaza conflict continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see the cyber-conflict also evolve alongside it.

NEWSCASTER: Iran Attacks Social Media


Iranian state targeted the public and private sector in the US, Israel, UK and beyond using social media.

Iranian hackers use more than ten fake identities on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube, Blogger) in a coordinated long-term cyber espionage campaign.  At least 2,000 people are caught in the snare and are connected to the false identities.

This campaign is working undetected since 2011 and targets senior American military and diplomatic personnel, congressional personnel, Washington DC journalists, US think tanks, defense contractors in the US and Israel, and others who are loud supporters of Israel to covertly obtain log-in credentials to the email systems of these victims. They targeted also additional victims in the UK as well as Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

The targeting, operational schedule and infrastructure used in this campaign is consistent with Iranian origins.
The fake identities claim they work in journalism, government and defense contracting. These accounts are elaborate and create credibility using among other tactics a fictitious journalism website newsonair.org that copies news content from other media outlets.

These credible identities then connected, linked, followed and friended target victims to get access to information on location, activities and relationships from updates and other common content.

These identities then targeted accounts with spear-phishing messages. Links which appeared to be legitimate asked recipients to log in to false pages to capture credential information. It is not clear at this time how many credentials the attack captured so far.

Additionally this campaign is linked to malware. While the malware is not very sophisticated, but it includes capability that can be used for data exfiltration.
The discovery and investigation of the attack reveals three critical insights:
  1. Social media offers a powerful and hidden route to target key government and industry leadership through an external base possibly outside of existing security measures.
  2. With reference to targeting associated with this campaign it is possible that Iranian hackers used accesses gained through these activities to support the development of weapon systems, reveal the disposition of the US military or the US alliance with Israel or give an advantage in negotiations between Iran and the US. Furthermore it is possible that any access or knowledge could be used as reconnaissance-for-attack before disruptive or destructive activities
  3. These adversaries are improving in finding and exploiting opportunities to carry out cyber espionage, even if they lacked sophisticated capability.  NEWSCASTER’s success is largely due to patience, brazen nature and innovative use of multiple social media platforms.

    It seems that the NEWSCASTER network targets mainly senior military and policymakers, companies associated with defense technology and the US-Israel lobby, however there are also victims in the financial and energy sectors as well as elsewhere and only a part of the accounts connected to this network were seen. Organizations involved in critical infrastructure or have information that may be of strategic or tactical interest to a nation-state adversary should be concerned about a threat such as this.
